Planning An Elopement: 5 Do's and You Need To Know
We may be biased but we love elopements.
The notion of tossing the guest list, the logistics and getting to jet set to somewhere exciting and say your I Do's. Imagine the memories and the stories you will tell your grandkids! Even if you're opting for a no-frills wedding, planning your elopement still deserves a little bit of energy and thought. Details like where to do it, what will you wear, will you do something afterwards and how can you make it unique and special to you as a couple. Here's a little guide to help you navigate the do's and don'ts of eloping.
1. Do It For The Right Reasons
Eloping can be something of a statement in itself, so if you're planning to get married without your friends and family by your side, make sure it's something you really want, and that you're doing it right reasons. Saving money, avoiding fuss, keeping things intimate and personal, or avoiding family drama, are all completely valid reasons to elope - just make sure you've thought a lot about your decision, and it's what you both want.
2. Don't Feel Bad About It
There can be a lot of guilt associated with elopements so this might be easier said than done, but try not to feel bad about your decision - you don't have to justify it to anyone. When eloping, people tend to understand that not everyone can be invited and that will lift some of the guilt-tripping weight off of your shoulders. This is your day and you should be able to choose how and who you spend it with.
3. Don't Miss The Legalities
Whatever location you decide on, make sure you read up on the legalities of that area. Some things to keep in mind are, how long will you need to register in advance, what ID and paperwork will you need to bring? If you're planning on an international wedding, whether the marriage will be valid in your own jurisdiction. Most importantly, make sure you collect your SIGNED marriage certificate before you fly home!
4. Do Make It Special
Just because you don't have 120 guests to wine, dine and entertain doesn't mean your elopement shouldn't be special. Whether it's writing personalised vows, shelling out on a fancy ride, hitting up a stunning winery, or going to a fancy restaurant for dinner, do whatever it is that will make your wedding day feel special, memorable and is something unique to you as a couple. The best thing about eloping is that you can do whatever you want, so make sure you do!
5. Do Rock Something Gorgeous
It doesn't have to be a dress or a suit. It doesn't have to be white or even formal. It does have to be special to you. At Drift Elopements, we LOVE couples who think outside of the box. SW Florida beaches provide such a stunning, natural background that you can up the ante on your outfit. Whether its a dress with a fun print or a sequin bridal jumpsuit, have fun with your look.
